We are just back from an amazing few days in the Scottish Cairngorm mountains. A fantastic place with truly amazing Scottish scenery. We are extremely lucky to live so close to this beautiful place.

As a family we relaxed, we played and enjoyed just being.

Well today has seen the first sunny day in Scotland this year and properly marks the start of Spring.

It really has been a long winter. Although it has been relatively mild in comparison to winters past, it has been a wet, dark and thoroughly depressing couple of months. I think until yesterday it has rained every single day of 2014!!

Today the sun shone.

Today was an easy challenge and one that was long overdue.

The cabinet in our bathroom was full of medicine. Medicines for coughs, headaches, colds, dodgy stomachs and lots more.

Every time we needed to venture inside to retrieve one of its contents the door had to be opened gingerly and a prayer said to ensure that the inner contents did not come spilling out like an avalanche!

It truly was a mess and with the door closed it was easy to be oblivious and in denial as to the chaos and clutter inside.

I took a bag and quickly examined each product looking carefully at the expiry dates. To my surprise most of the stuff was past its use by date and not wanting to take any chances with my families’ health they were binned.

It’s amazing that so much was left untouched. I estimate that more than 70% was binned and I now have an organised space where I can remove its contents with confidence.

This whole task took less than 10 minutes and gave me a boost and feel good factor that no medicine could give.

No area of my home will escape my attentions this year and it has shown me that even when I don’t have much time I can still do something to improve the space I live in!

If you have been following my posts you will have gathered by now that I love a bargain and this character trait extends into my food shopping habits too.

I love an offer……..

3 for 2, buy one get one free, buy one get two free, half price etc etc

The Laundry machine…… well that’s what it feels like in my home.

It seems to have a life of its own.

It eats, breathes, never sleeps and continually churns out on a daily basis more dirty washing that needs to be washed, clean clothes that need to be dried, dried clothes that need to be folded and folded clothes that need to find their way back to their respective homes.

It feels like a never ending treadmill that I can’t get off and if I get complacent the effects can be felt by all members of the household.

As the song goes “These boots (and shoes) are made for walking” and yes indeed they did or will do out of my door once I get to the charity shop and skip.

I have to admit that I love shoes and do have a tendency to hoard them, keeping them even when they do not fit perfectly or have been worn so much that they are really not fit to be seen in public anymore.

However, where my shoe collection and hoarding tendencies differ from other women is that for many years I did so out of necessity. Read the rest of this entry »

Is it just me that’s got an over abundance of toiletries?

I have hundreds of little bottles of shampoos, hair conditioner, body lotions, face creams, body washes, lipsticks……. I could go on but I’m sure you get the idea!

Most of these products have been acquired from hotels where I have stayed, beauty bundles that I have received free when I have bought a product from their ranges, freebies from magazines either plastered to the front cover or free via magazine subscriptions or items I have sent for to try for free.

In our house we have three small children who are always growing out of their clothes (who’d have thought it!) and therefore we have to constantly manage their drawers and cupboards to make sure that all of the current clothes still lurking in there fit as well as making sure that the drawers close!

The drawers not closing is usually the trigger point for me to do something about it!

Anyone with children will tell you that getting them to try on clothes to see if they still fit is a mammoth challenge in itself and therefore this is one task that I know I put off as neither the children nor I will enjoy the process.

Life as a working Mum has always been a struggle for me and a balancing act between family and working life. I try (and sometimes/often fail) to get the balance quite right. That’s ok. Although I strive for perfection I don’t beat myself up for not getting there. Better to shoot for the moon and if you miss you’ll land among the stars!

I have now encountered a new balancing act in my life. Read the rest of this entry »
